Advancing Community wellness in the Coachella Valley

Annual report: District increases access to healthcare, exceeds giving milestone in 2023-2024

The most recent annual report from the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation reflects the end of one successful chapter and the beginning of another, as the agency leadership prepares to implement a new 30-year hospital lease-purchase agreement.

The report captures the District & Foundation's grant awards, initiatives, programs, and other achievements during 18 months, from January 2023 through June 2024.

Traditionally, the report has covered one calendar year, January through December. However, because the agency operates on a fiscal-year calendar -- July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024 -- the scope of the current report was changed to align with the fiscal year. To ensure there were no gaps in data, significant achievements from January through June 2023 were also noted in the report.

Report highlights include:

  • The District & Foundation launched a $1 million Request for Proposals to address loneliness and social isolation, which the U.S. Surgeon General has described as a national epidemic
  • Financially supported nearly 90 scholarships awarded to students through our grantees
  • With a $341,648 USAging grant, the District & Foundation-led Coachella Valley Equity Collaborative increased access to multiple vaccines among seniors and other vulnerable communities
  • Our total funding support over 25+ years in the Coachella Valley surpassed $101 million during the reporting period

"Coachella Valley residents and stakeholders will find valuable information in the annual report about the myriad ways in which the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation has advanced community wellness since 2023," District & Foundation CEO Chris Christensen said. "The common thread thoughout the report is collaboration. None of the successes would have been possible without the important work of our grantees and community partners. I look forward to many more collective accomplishments in the future."
